Our guide to a safe trailer tow.
This is what every RV 5th wheel or Camper Trailer Owner needs to know:
Whether you pull the trailer yourself or hire a company to tow your rv trailer you should be aware of the following safety checklist. This list below covers preventative action.
To start anything can happen mechanically whether a trailer is new or old yet following pre trip safety guide lines strongly reduce the chance of your camper delivery being a disaster.
This guide is for all people towing a rv camper trailer.
1. Start out by knowing the route you are going to take. Getting lost pulling a huge 5th wheel or Travel trailer is no fun.
2. Look at the weather reports on the route you may take. If its more miles to go a route with less change of snow and ice or major storms then go that route. It may be more miles but less delays and hazards.
3. If you have little experience pulling a trailer then do NOT do a long trip across country. There are many factors such as high winds that you may not be used to. Hire a company like us.
4. Inspect and Secure items inside your camper: If you have lose items inside your trailer, there is a huge chance they will move around or fall off a shelf and not only break yet may cause other things in your recreational vehicle to get damaged or destroyed. Secure anything that might fall or move. This includes cabinet doors that might swing up, TVs that may not be mounted tough enough to remain stable during bumping roads. When in doubt , secure it!
5. Propane tanks sure be shut off.
6. Shut and lock windows inside trailer. If not shut and locked your windows could bounce and break.
7. Close vents.
8. If there is a TV antenna on roof up, make sure its down. Most RVs have a lever inside trailer that is used to turn and roll down the antenna.
9. Now that you have checked and secured the inside of your RV, its time for the outside. Walk around the whole unit and check for the obvious such as loose siding, lights hanging or broken.
10. Check the tires. Each tire has a number of air pressure that is required for a tire. Kicking or hitting the tires with a bat is not a good way to check tire pressure. An Air Guage is the only way tire pressure should be checked.
11. Look at the hubs. Is there a leak? If so, then NO go. Get it fixed.
12. Make sure lug nuts are tight on wheels. A good way to tell is if you see rust coming down off the lug, then chances are they have not been tight. Yet, the best way to check is with a lug wrench.
13. Tire dry rot. Look for cracking in the tires. Sometimes you will not be able to tell if a tire is dry rotted. Chances are if your trailer has been sitting for a few years in almost any climate there will be dry rot.
14. When in doubt change all tires before a long road trip. When a tire blows you will find yourself on the side of the road waiting for road service. The bill for that could be very expensive. Even if you have a great road side assistance service you still will lose time for your trip waiting for road service. Yet worst of all when tire blows it can cause severe damage to your trailer.
15. Lights - All Trailers must have all working lights.
16. Trailer Tounge or 5th wheel King Pin. Make sure there is no heavy rust on your trailer tounge or 5th wheel king pin area.
17. RV Trailers must have a working break away switch.
18. Spare tire. Its always good to have a good spare wheel and tire. Sometimes tire shops in certain areas of the country may not have your tire in stock. This will delay your trip even more.
There are may other things you should check on your 5th wheel or camper trailer before your road trip. To find out more please call us at 800-462-0038.
